X sues India in new censorship battle by Elon Musk

Elon Musk’s company, X (formerly Twitter), has filed a lawsuit against the Indian government, alleging unlawful censorship practices. The lawsuit, submitted on March 5, 2025, challenges the government’s use of Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology (IT) Act, claiming it leads to arbitrary content removal without proper legal procedures.

X contends that this section allows government officials to issue content-blocking orders through a platform managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, bypassing the structured review process mandated by Section 69A of the IT Act.

The Karnataka High Court is scheduled to hear the case on March 27, 2025. This legal action adds to the ongoing tensions between X and the Indian government over content regulation and free speech concerns on social media platforms.
